6 female engineers get NASENI’s N70.5m grant

NASENI awarded N70.5m for six female engineers

The National Agency for Science and Engineering Infrastructure (NASENI), on Tuesday, awarded N70.5 million grant to six female engineers under its ‘Developing Engineering Leaders Through Her’ (DELT-Her).

DELT-Her is a project under the Delta-2 programme of the Agency, under implementation through the Presidential Implementation Committee on Technology Transfer (PICTT)

TheNewsZenith recall that NASENI had on March 8, during the International Women’s Day celebration, launched the DELT-Her project and call for proposals.

The project is an initiative to address gender imbalance in the practice of engineering and technology-based businesses in Nigeria.

NASENI, through the programme, is sponsoring innovative ideas and projects of young female engineers.

Addressing the gathering during the award know Abuja, the CEO of NASENI, Mr Khalil Halilu, said “DELT-Her initiative is aimed at empowering young women in engineering and technology”.

TheNewsZenith reports that the Coordinating Director, Planning and Business Development Directorate, Dr Nonyem Onyechi, represented Halilu at the event.

He emphasized the importance of providing necessary tools, platforms and support for women to thrive in the field of engineering.

He said the selected projects not only challenged the status quo but also had the potential to address real-world problems.

NASENI’s boss affirmed that young girls belong in STEM fields and that their dreams are valid.

“I encourage awardees to view their success as a beacon for others and the commitment to fostering environments where women can excel in engineering and technology,” he said.

Also, speaking, the Chairman of PICTT, Dr Mohammed Dahiru, said PICTT selected six outstanding innovative ideas for grants out of more than 120 applications received.

Dairu said the event was to sow a seed that would change Nigeria in technology transfer.

“We are recognising our awardees for their amazing feats. We also celebrate the just concluded International Day of the Girl Child.

“This is with the hope to inspire the younger generation to embrace science and engineering”, he further explained,” TheNewsZenith quotes Dairu as saying.

According to him, the awardees will receive grants to the tune of the project cost estimate, technical support, links to partners and commercialisation of the R&D institute outputs.

“Based on their project, some of the awardees have also been selected to participate in the forthcoming AFRI. Lab Annual gathering in Cape Town, South Africa.”

Amonght the grant recipients, Rukkaya Abdulmutalib received N3 million. Her project is Artificial Intelligence Censored Machine to Monitor Soil Health for Green-Houses project.

Patience Ibrahim-Janda invented Automobile Brake Pads produced from Organic Waste and received N10 million.

Also, Amina Ibrahim Khaleel produced Drone for Intelligent Real-time Security and Target Tracking and received N17.5 million.

Dr Kudirat Oyewumi Jimoh produced Electronic Training Board/Device for Science and Engineering Students and got N16.5 million.

Dr Ikechukwu Ijeoma Francisca invented Automatic Bambara Flour Processing Machine got N8.5 million.

Abisola Ayomide Olayiwola invented Solar-powered Snail Shelling Machine and received N15 million.

NASENI also celebrated the commemoration of the Girl Child International Day celebration. During the event, four Junior Girls Secondary Schools exhibited their innovative and technological devices at the Agency.

The schools are Junior Secondary School Jikwoyi, exhibiting 1-Fueless Generator.

Junior Secondary School Pasali exhibiting Fabrication of Mini Refinery Waste Plastics into Home Use Liquids Fuels and Gas.

Others, Junior Secondary School Phase 3, Gwagwalada, exhibited an Ultra Modern Solar Power Sea Planting and Chemical Spraying Machine.

The Junior Secondary School Kuje showcasing Conversion of Water and petrol into methane Gas by using Pressure and Junior Secondary School Area 11 – Archimedes Screw Turbines.
