93% of Pakistanis support ban on cigarette sale

Findings of a study, on Monday, showed that 93 per cent of Pakistanis agreed that the sale of cigarettes should be banned.

A Gallup and Gilani Pakistan survey reported that a nationally representative sample of adult men and women across the country took part in the study.

Respondents were asked: “Do you think the sale of cigarettes should be banned?”

In response to this question, 93 per cent replied yes while seven per cent responded no.

The rural-urban breakdown for the responses showed three per cent of people from urban areas support the ban.

An analysis of the provincial breakdown shows that the highest percentage of people who opt for the ban belongs to the eastern Punjab and southern Sindh provinces.

Ninety-four per cent of people from both parts responded “yes”.

Meanwhile, 93 per cent of northwestern Khyber Pakhtunkhwa presented the same reply.

The southwestern Balochistan province recorded the lowest percentage among the provinces.

This is as 87 per cent said that the sale of cigarettes should be banned, according to the survey. (Xinhua)
