The Borno State Government and World Health Organisation (WHO) have begun a 10-day polio vaccination campaign to eliminate any potential poliovirus.
At the start of the campaign, the State Commissioner for Health and Human Services, Prof. Baba M. Gana, said the vaccination will cover all the 27 local government areas.
Dr Aliyu Shettima, Director of Disease Control and Immunisation, represented the commissioner at the campaign flag off.
Gana said the campaign is targeting to reach over two million children across the states, for the vaccination.
The team will administer two types of vaccines, namely inactivated poliovirus vaccine (fIPV) and novel oral poliomyelitis (nOPV).
The nOPV is polio vaccine type-2 meant for children aged 0-59 months.
Gana said vaccination teams would be situated in fixed and strategic locations. Such locations include schools, markets, orphanage homes, motor parks and other public gatherings.

The commissioner said traditional and religious leaders would play a vital role in achieving the overall objective of this campaign.
He commended the WHO for remaining committed to the state’s objective of ensuring access to quality health services.
He also thanked the global health body for its continued support to the state government in eradication poliovirus.
WHO’s acting Director in Borno, Dr Moisule Hussaini Ganga, pledged the organisation’s continued support to the state government towards immunising eligible children.
“This campaign has the capacity to eliminate any potential virus, including the wild poliovirus.
“And we are optimistic that we will achieve 100 per cent success,” Ganga said.
