Customs intercepts 1,620 extinct birds cargo at MMIA

Lagos, Aug. 5, ’25 (TNZ) The Nigeria Customs Service (NSC), Murtala Muhammed Airport Command, Lagos, has intercepted a cargo of over 1,620 Ringneck Parakeets (Parrots) and Canaries.

TheNewsZenith reports that the extinct birds were bound for illegal export to Kuwait at the time NCS intercepted them.

The Area Controller, MMIA Command, Comptroller Michael Awe, confirmed the development in a statement in Lagos.

Awe said vigilant officers at NCS control post intercepted the cargo at the airport on July 31.

“These live 1,620  birds comprised of Ringneck, Parakeets (Parrots) and Canaries (Green and Yellow Fronted). They are species under protection.

“The birds ought to have been accompanied by a Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species (CITES) permit.

“Nigeria is a signatory to the CITES of Wild Fauna and Flora.

”Therefore, we have the responsibility to ensure that the international trade in specimens of this kind follow due process.

“This is a cargo that should have been accompanied by required permits and required proper documentations, to prove that the birds were legally obtained.

“This is to ensure that the trade will not be detrimental to the birds’ survival.

”Likewise, the same proxedure is applicable to all other endangered species,” TheNewsZenith quotes Awe as saying.

Awe said that the command would intensify investigation to apprehend the perpetrators.

He announced that the NCS would hand over the birds to a sister agency, National Parks Service (NPS) for necessary actions. (TNZ)
