Earthquake kills 4, damage buildings in E/Indonesia

A disaster agency official said four people died with several buildings destroyed after a 5.4 magnitude earthquake jolted eastern Papua province in Eastern Indonesia on Thursday.

“People strongly felt the jolts of the quake here.

“The quake damaged houses, a restaurant and buildings,” Jonathan Koirewoa, manager of the operation control centre for the local disaster management and mitigation agency, told Xinhua via phone.

“Four people died during the earthquake. Now we are carrying out risk assessments of the quake,” he said.

The country’s meteorology, climatology and geophysics agency reported the earthquake struck at 13.28 p.m. local time (0628 GMT).

Its epicentre is located one kilometre southwest of the provincial capital of Jayapura and has a depth of 10 kilometres.

It said the earthquake did not have the potential to trigger a tsunami.

Several aftershocks occurred after the main shock, according to the agency. (Xinhua)
