Kenya’s arid areas recovering from drought after rains

Kenya’s arid regions are recovering from the dry spell following heavy rains, the National Drought Management Authority (NDMA) said in a report released on Friday.

Drought has ravaged arid regions for over a year now.

The institution said the pasture situation has improved for millions of livestock as grass regenerates and water becomes available.

“Analysis of April rainfall performance indicates that several parts of arid and semi-arid lands received good rainfall,” NDMA stated.

However, NDMA said despite recovery across ASAL areas, food security situation is yet to get to the desired level.

This is because there is often a lag between recovery from drought and food availability.

The number of people in need of assistance remains at 4.4 million while the risk of acute malnutrition is still there, said the institution.
