Lagos State Government says it is planning to establish carbon registry as a step to build resilience against climate change impacts.
TheNewsZenith reports that this is the high point of discussion at a stakeholder’s engagement on the implementation of the state’s Green House Gas registry.
The Lagos State Environmental Protection Agency (LASEPA) organised the engagement.
In a keynote speech, the General Manager, LASEPA, Dr Tunde Ajayi, said the establishment of a comprehensive carbon registry was a pivotal step.
Ajayi noted that the step was the state’s commitment to address the challenges of Green House Gases (GHG) and build resilience against climate change impacts.
TheNewsZenith reports that the engagement was titled: “Lagos Green House Gas Registry and Industrial Sector Emissions Inventory Development in Support of the Lagos Emissions Cap-and Trade Scheme”.
Ajayi, remarked that the rate of emission of Green House Gas (GHGs) was alarming considering the devastating effects on the air quality of Lagos State.
According to him, GHGs have serious implication on public health and economic downturn.
He described GHGs as gases from human activities on the Earth’s atmosphere that can trap heat.
The heat, in turn, raises the Earth’s average temperature, known as global warming.
“In line with this administration’s commitment to “Health and Environment,” LASEPA, wish to create public awareness about the GHG reporting. And, the role of the registry in combating climate change.
“Consequently, the establishment of a comprehensive carbon registry is a pivotal step in our commitment to address the challenges of Green House Gases.
“We are also committed to building resilience against climate change impacts.

“This will serve as a vital tool for tracking, managing and mitigating GHG emissions.
“This will enable us to make informed decisions and implement effective environmental policies.
“I believe that the success of this initiative hinges on the active collaboration of all stakeholders in a quest for environmental sustainability,” Ajayi said.
According to him, the engagement would provide a digital platform for open dialogue, knowledge sharing, initiative and ideas to develop standard protocols and guidelines for reporting GHG emissions.
He added that the overall aim was to ensure consistency and comparability across different entities towards a shared goal.
Dr Mofoluso Fagbeja, the Lead Consultant from TPHG Technologies Ltd., introduced the GHG registry.
Fagbeja said the carbon registry database is the primary repository for GHG emission information in Lagos state.
He said the government would integrate the GHG registry with sector-specific GHG and air pollutant emissions inventories.
“It is designed to have two different User Interfaces (UI). The front-end UI will be for public display of carbon emissions in Lagos state.
“The other interface is the backend UI. It will oversee the administrative and technical management of the registry and inventories.”
One of the stakeholders, Mr Gbenga Adeleke said the registry would bring Lagos State and Nigeria into the global compact.
Adeleke, who is the Group Head, Environment and Social Risk Manager for Access Bank added that the registry would give metrics for GHG emissions in the state.
This will reduce its impact on climate change and the health of Lagos residents, he said.
