LASWA, security agencies to curb crime on Lagos waterways

The Lagos State Waterways Authority (LASWA) is working with two security arms to curb insecurity on Lagos waterways, the General Manager, Mr Oluwadamilola Emmanuel, has said.

TheNewsZenith reports that the collaboration is with the Marine Police and the Nigerian Navy.
Emmanuel explained that beyond the Marine Police and the Navy, LASWA laos has its command and control centre to monitor the waterways adequately.
This clarification is coming against the backdrop of rise in incidences of crimes on waterways in the state.
He said LASWA has been proactive in dealing with cases of banditry, piracy and other crimes along the waterways.
“We are proactive as regards security on the waterways and that is why we are collaborating with the Marine Police and the Nigeria Navy,” Emmanuel said.

The GM also spoke on the newOmibus, saying that the government would hand over the boats to private operators.
“The operators will be responsible for the security of the boats.
“In terms of the safety of these boats, throughout last year, we have not heard a single case of theft of either parts or boats on our waterways.”
According to him, the there is insurance cover on all the boats.
“Insurance will, definitely, cover any incidence of damage or theft,” he added.
