Awka, July 23, ’25 (TNZ) The Nnamdi Azikiwe University Teaching Hospital (NAUTH) is undergoing a monumental transformation as it strives to become Africa’s largest teaching hospital.
TheNewsZenith reports that the hospital, located in the industrious city of Nnewi, was established in 1988.
Rising steadily on the city’s outskirts, the permanent site of NAUTH, described as a medical city in the making, is set to emerge as one of Africa’s largest teaching hospitals.
Augustine Okoli, Special Assistant to the Chief Medical Director (CMD), on Media and Community Mobilisation, announced the new development in a statement mailed to TheNewsZenith on Wednesday.
“The hospital is already drawing attention to medical tourism opportunities in West Africa.
“It is also simultaneously positioning its infrastructure to support a regional hub for both treatment and training.
“International partnerships, innovations in healthcare delivery, and a culture of continuous improvement all point to a future where NAUTH competes not just nationally but globally.
“Ultimately, the NAUTH permanent site will become a symbol of Nigeria’s vision of effective project execution.

“It is a living testament to what institutional leadership, strategic planning, and community trust can build.
“As it scales toward a 5,000-bed goal, NAUTH is not just expanding, it is evolving into a continental powerhouse.
“It is positioning to become a landmark in African healthcare, and a source of national pride,” TheNewsZenith quotes Okoli as stating.
“From its modest beginnings as a regional medical centre, NAUTH has metamorphosed into a vital institution serving Southeastern Nigeria.
“However, the hospital’s transformation truly began in 2021 with the appointment of Prof. Joseph Ugboaja as the CMD.
“Services at NAUTH have expanded dramatically.
“The hospital now hosts advanced departments in cardiology, oncology, orthopaedics, gastroenterology, paediatrics, thoracic surgery, mental health, ENT, and nephrology. (TNZ)
