NCDC responding to diphtheria outbreak in Lagos, Kano

The Nigeria Centre for Disease Control and Prevention (NCDC) says it is responding to reports of diphtheria cases in Lagos and Kano States.

The Director-General of the centre, Dr Ifedayo Adetifa, announced this in a statement on Friday.

Adetifa said the centre is also monitoring the situation in Osun and Yobe states.

He said that there are laboratory-confirmed cases in addition to clinically suspected cases.

Diphtheria is a serious bacterial infection caused by the bacterium called Corynebacterium species.

It affects the nose, throat and sometimes the skin of an individual.

Transmission of Diphtheria spreads easily between people through direct contact with infected people.

It also spread through droplets from coughing or sneezing and contact with contaminated clothing and objects.
