The Nigerian Navy has taken delivery of an Offshore Survey Vessel ( OSV 115) for scientific hydro-graphic and oceanographic missions.

The Director of Naval Information, Commodore Aiwuyor Adams-Aliu, announced this in a statement, weekend in Abuja.

Adams-Aliu said the vessel ”is the latest addition to the Nigerian Navy fleet. It will operate in tandem with the OSV 190 “NNS LANA’’.

TheNewsZenith gathered that a French shipbuilding company, OCEA SA designed and built the 35m-long vessel.

It has progressive technology, including medium or shallow water multi-beam echo sounders and other essential survey equipment.

The vessel, delivered in Lagos on April 17, will conduct in-depth surveys in shallow and medium waters.

It has comprehensive support services, like training, spare parts, tooling and necessary documentation.

This will ensure seamless integration and operation within the Nigerian Navy’s fleet.

Adams-Aliu revealed that OCEA SA constructed the  OSV 115 in 2021.

“The primary role of the new vessel is to conduct hydrographic and oceanographic surveys.

“It will also support ongoing efforts to safeguard Nigeria’s territorial waters and optimise the current administration’s Blue Economy initiatives.

“The Nigerian Navy began local production of internationally-recognised nautical charts in 2019.

“And the newly-acquired OSV will further improve its hydro-graphic charting proficiency,’’ the statement read in part.

TheNewsZenith quoted ‘Military Africa’, an online maritime blog, as reporting that the French shipyards, OCEA, in June 2021 announced that it had won an international tender to deliver a new 35-meter hydrographic research vessel to the Nigerian Navy.
