Ogun lawmakers impeach Speaker, elect new one

Members of the Ogun State House of Assembly, on Tuesday, impeached their Speaker, Olakunle Oluomo (APC-Ifo1).

Eighteen out of 26 members removed Oluomo during the plenary, presided over by the Deputy Speaker, Mrs Bolanle Ajayi (APC-Yewa South) in Abeokuta.

The embattled speaker was not at the plenary but the Clerk and the Deputy Clerk of the assembly, Mr Deji Adeyemo and Mrs Funmilayo Adeyemi attended.

Consequently, the lawmakers elected Mr Oludaisi Elemide (APC-Odeda) as the new Speaker.

A member of the House, Mr Adegoke Adeyanju (APC-Yewa North 1) moved the motion for Oluomo’s impeachment. Mr Ademola Adeniran (APC-Sagamu II) seconded the motion.

Speaking after his election, the new Speaker, Elemide assured that the people of the state should expect the best from him.

“We are law-abiding legislators. We want the world to know that there is now a change in the leadership of the House of Assembly” he told newsmen.

Elemide, who said that 18 lawmakers supported his emergence as speaker, appealed to residents of the state to remain calm.

“We are in the custody of all the authority of the house. We are assure that the new leadership will support our governor, Prince Dapo Abiodun.

“I can assure you that the governor did not know anything about this impeachment,” the new Speaker said.

Also spaking, Mr Damilola Soneye (APC-Obafemi Owode) accused the former speaker of alleged gross misconduct, arrogance, poor leadership style.

Soneye also accused Oluomo of inciting members against one another.

The embattled former speaker could not be reached for comment  as he could not be reached on phone.

TheNewsZenith reports that there was a heavy security presence at the assembly complex during the plenary.
