On Saturday, the Red Cross Society (RCS), in collaboration with the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS), distributed relief materials to 300 victims of the 2022 flooding in Oyo State.
TheNewsZenith recalls that the flooding ravaged Egbeda and Ibadan South-East Local Government Areas (LGAs) of the state in 2022.
The National President of RCS in Nigeria, Prince Oluyemisi Adeaga, called on all tiers of the government to intensify training in first-aid and rescue operations.
According to him, this ensures prompt and effective responses to disasters.
Adeaga said although the government had been responsive to disasters, there is a need for improvement.
“The government is doing a lot. But people need those around them to respond promptly and professionally when disasters occur.
“This is to ensure that those trying to help do not cause further harm,” the RCS president said.
He emphasised the need for resident training in emergency management.
Meanwhile, the Project Coordinator of ECOWAS, Dauda Mohammed, reiterated the organisation’s commitment to improving the lives of the common people.

Mohammed said ECOWAS selected 3,500 vulnerable households across Adamawa, Anambra, Kebbi, Rivers, Kogi and Oyo States.
He added that more initiatives would soon be implemented.
The Oyo State Branch Chairman of NRCS, Mr Babalola Famade, remarked that there was a need for more people to join Red Cross. This is to minimise damages on disaster victims.
Speaking on behalf of the beneficiaries, Mr Sakiru Olatinwo, expressed gratitude for the “timely help”.
Olatinwo said the victims were grateful for the assistance, despite the current national economic situation.
TheNewsZenith reports that search of the beneficiaries received a credit card worth N90,000, over three months.
RCS also distributed food items to each household victim.
The items include 12 kilogrammes of beans, 25 kilogrammes of rice, 15 kilogrammes of garri, five litres of vegetable oil and five litres of palm oil.
