The Nigeria Police Force is trailing missing 602 bags of wheat out of 1,840 bags, belonging to the United Nations World Food Programme (UNWFP), having recovered 1,238 and arrested five suspects in connection with the diversion of the grains.
ACP Olumuyiwa Adejobi, the Force Public Relation Officer (FPRO), announced this in a statement, e-mailed to TheNewsZenith on Thursday.
Adejobi said Eastern Port Police Command confirmed they arrested five suspects for the alleged diversion from Port-Harcourt on Feb. 6.
The grains were to be transported from Ibeto Port Terminal, Port-Harcourt to an Internally Displaced Persons camp in Kano State.
But the drivers, alongside their accomplices, tasked with this assignment, allegedly diverted the consignments.
The operatives of the Nigeria Police attached to the Eastern Port, however, intercepted them and apprehended the suspects.
“The operatives arrested five suspects (names withheld). They also recovered 1,238 stolen bags of wheat along with two vehicles used in carrying out the crime.
“The command has returned recovered wheat bags to the World Food Programme.

“Efforts are on to recover the missing 602 bags of wheat. And arrest other suspects associated with the crime,” he stated.
Adejobi reiterated the Force’s commitment to enforcing all laws and evolving anti-crime strategies to curb illegal activities at our various ports and around the economic hubs in Nigeria.
“The commitment is to stimulate the government’s quick economic recovery and development agenda in our county.
“Inspector General of Police (IGP) Kayode Egbetokun has re-emphasized the goal of the Nigeria Police Force.
“The goal is to ardently deal with individuals who engage in sabotaging the country’s economy, in line with extant laws.
“He (IGP) has, therefore, ordered that the suspects be charged to court upon conclusion of investigations and tying of all loose ends.
