The Rivers House of Assembly has pledged to make adequate logistics preparation to save lives and properties in the event of flooding in the state.
Mrs Linda Stewart (PDP-Okrika), Chairman of Ad-hoc Committee on flooding, stated this at a meeting with some local government chairmen.
The committee convened the meeting of local councils mentioned in 2023 Nigerian Meteorological Agency’s (NIMET) flood prediction.
The NewsZenith recall that NIMET had earlier predicted that 19 LGAs in the state would suffer heavy floods in 2023.
Stewart said the meeting aimed to ascertain the level of preparation at the LGAs to contain flood impacts.
“We want to ascertain the logistics assigned for the management of flood and preparations in terms of containment of flood-related crises.
“The council chairmen have also briefed the us on level of sensitisation adopted to educate the local populace.
“Radio jingles in local dialects and other media platforms have been engaged so as to create flood awareness in the various councils” she said.

Stewart noted that the council chairmen have constructed temporary camps at strategic locations in affected areas.
This is to ensure safety of internally displaced persons in event of flood.
She assured that the committee will continue to provide infrastructures that would mitigative against flooding in the affected areas.
The lawmaker also said the committee would ensure that the state government and corporate bodies would give adequate guidance.
Speaking on behalf of the council chairmen, Nengi Barasua (Bonny LGA) thanked the committee for the level of cooperation aimed at mitigating against flooding at the grassroots.
Barasua said affected councils have also constituted committees to ensure de-silting of drainage as part of proactive steps against flood.
