Shippers’ Council holds International Maritime seminar for Judges

The Nigerian Shippers’ Council and National Judicial Institute  are set to jointly host the 17th International Maritime Seminar for Judges.

Rebecca Adamu, Assistant Director in the Public Relations Unit, announced in a statement e-mailed to TheNewsZenith on Friday.

According to the statement, the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Sen. George Akume, will chair the seminar. Also, Gov. Abdullahi Sule of Nasarawa State, will be the Special Guest of Honour.

TheNewsZenith reports that NSC is under the auspices of the Federal Ministry of Marine and Blue Economy.

Adamu stated that the three-day seminar will hold in Abuja from Tuesday, July 9.

The objective of the seminar “is to update the knowledge of participants” on contemporary issues.

This is especially in the International Maritime Law and Admiralty Practice as they impact Nigeria and the West African Sub-region.

The participants include justices, judges, in-house counsel, legal practitioners and captains of Industry.

Eminent jurists, erudite scholars and seasoned Maritime/Legal practitioners from the judiciary and foreign experts will present papers on a range of relevant topics affecting the sector.

The scholars will address several burning and complex issues bedevilling the maritime industry.

Topics of discussion will include “Legal Issues in Nigerian Seaports Trade Facilitation” and “Shipping in the Age of Innovation and Climate Change: The Role of Artificial Intelligence, Autonomous Vessels and Decarbonisation”.

“ADR as an Effective Tool in the Resolution of Maritime Disputes: Current Development and Matters Arising” and  “Admiralty Jurisdiction Procedure Rules 2023 and Matters Arising – An Appellate Perspective to Admiralty Jurisdiction in Nigeria Maritime Law in 2024 are also for presentation.

The Chief Justice of Nigeria, Justice Olukayode Ariwoola, is the Chief Host and the Minister of Marine and Blue Economy, Alhaji Adegboyega Oyetola, will be the Host.

Distinguished dignitaries, include the Chief Justices of The Gambia, Ghana, Kenya, Liberia and Sierra Leone will also attend the seminar.
