South African Police say they have arrested 140 suspects and recovered more than 300 unlicensed firearms and 2,800 rounds of ammunition in the last two weeks in Gauteng Province.
The unlicensed firearms were recovered from Oct. 11 to 24 in Gauteng Province, said police spokesperson, Dimakatso Sello.
“The police in Gauteng continue to recover unlicensed firearms and ammunition in circulation in a concerted effort to address serious and violent crime.
“This is the result of routine crime prevention patrols, stop-and-searches and community tip-offs.
“All the recovered firearms will be subjected to a ballistic test to establish whether it can be linked to other serious crimes committed,” Sello said.
Some of the firearms were recovered from illegal miners, according to the spokesperson, who urges the people to continue supplying information about criminality to the Police.
