Storekeeper faces N3.8m theft charges

A 22-year-old storekeeper, Adijat Bello, on Thursday, appeared before a Yaba Chief Magistrates’ Court in Lagos for allegedly stealing N3.8 million from her employer.

Bello, a resident of No 47, Mobegelu Ijebu-Ode, Ogun State, stood trial over a two-count charge of conspiracy and stealing.

The Prosecutor, Insp. Magaji Haruna, told the court that Bello and some others at large, committed the offences on Nov. 3, at about 4.15 p.m., at No 28, Bajulaiye Road, Shomolu Bariga, Lagos.

Haruna said that Bello, who was responsible for giving out goods to the company marketers and keeping records, fraudulently converted N3.8 million to personal use.

He said that after the employer at Bashan Global resources Ltd., did a thorough check on the accounts, he found out that Bello had been stealing from him since September.

The prosecutor explained that Bello was found to have misappropriated funds over a period of two months.

The offence, he said, contravened Sections 287 (7) and 411 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015.

The Magistrate, Mrs O. A Adefope, granted Bello N1 million bail with two responsible sureties in like sum.

She ordered that the sureties must show evidence of three years of tax payments to the Lagos State Government.‎

The case was adjourned until Dec. 20 for trial.
