Lagos, Jan. 8, ’25 (TNZ) A total of 561 out of 16,409 students of the University of Lagos are graduating with First-Class degrees and distinctions during its 55th Convocation scheduled for this week in Lagos.
TheNewsZenith reports that the Vice-Chancellor, Folasade Ogunsola, announced this at the convocation press conference on Wednesday in Lagos.
Ogunsola said out of 16,409 graduating students, 9,684 will receive first degrees and diplomas, while 6,659 will receive postgraduate degrees.
Similarly, 66 will graduate from the UNILAG Business School.
TheNewsZenith recalls that the institution convocated 17,464 students at its 54th Convocation, held from Monday, Jan. 15 to Friday, Jan. 19, 2024.
The VC also announced Damilare Adebakin and Samuel Badekale, as the best-graduating students.
“They finished with a perfect Cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA) of 5.0.
“Both are from the Department of Cell Biology and Genetics in the Faculty of Science,” TheNewsZenith quotes Ogunsola saying.
They are closely followed by Olamide Emida, a student from the Department of Accounting, who achieved a 4.95 CGPA.
Ogunsola noted that three individuals would be conferred with honorary degrees.

They are Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, the director-general of the World Trade Organisation (WTO); Fola Adeola, co-founder of Guaranty Trust Bank (GTBank Plc) and Kolawole Adesina, the Group Managing Director of Sahara Power Group.
TheNewsZenith reports that there would also be a convocation lecture. The title of the lecture is “Universities as Hubs for Development and Wealth Creation”.
Mr Tayo Aduloju, the CEO of the Nigeria Economic Summit Group (NESG), will deliver the lecture. Former Lagos State Governor and former Minister of Works, Babatunde Raji Fashola, will chair the occasion.
Giving a breakdown of the performance of other graduating students, Ogunsola said 3,916 will graduate with second-class upper, 3,763 with second-class lower, 1,143 with third-class and 78 with pass degrees.
The VC explained that 223 degrees are unclassified in Pharmacy, Basic and Clinical Sciences degrees.
She added that the Faculty of Management Sciences recorded the highest number of first-class graduates with 125, followed by the Faculties of Sciences and Engineering with 121 and 61, respectively.
Of the 6,659 postgraduate degrees, the VC said there are 513 graduates with a postgraduate diploma, 5,933 are graduating with Masters and 213 with PhD.
She added that the overall best PhD thesis award went to Adetoun Akintoye with a PhD in chemistry. Also, the best PhD in humanities went to Eniola Ladipo. (TNZ)
