2023 Elections: Ogun Muslims give conditions to vote candidates, promise full participation

The Ogun State Muslim Council (OMC) has advised Muslims to actively participate in the 2023 general elections and elect God-fearing people to govern the state.

The advice is contained in a statement issued at the end of the Council’s meeting held, a weekend in Ijebu-Ode.

Alhaji Kamaldeen Akintunde, Secretary-General of the OMC signed the statement.

The council specifically asked Muslims to consider competencies, good track records, selfless services and sincere commitment of candidates to protect the rights and interests of the Muslim community when voting.

The meeting, held at the Awujale’s Palace was presided over by the Council’s President-General, the Awujale and the paramount ruler of Ijebuland, Oba Sikiru Kayode Adetona.

Oba Adetona said that the council has mobilised Muslims to come out en masse to vote for candidates that will enhance the peace, progress and development of the state.

A Vice President-General of the Council, Otunba AbdulFatahi Arowolo represented the Royal Father at the meeting.

He said that Muslims should not consider political apathy as an option in the 2023 general elections.

“The stake is high now that Muslims must adequately protect their rights and interests.

Representatives from the Egba, Yewa, Ijebu and Remo divisions also spoke at the meeting.

They promised to mobilise the Muslims for the general elections.

They also pledged to ensure that Muslim communities actively participate in the ongoing political process.

Various speakers spoke on the stand of Islam about politics, saying that “Islam is not against political participation”.

They, therefore, enjoined Muslims to emulate Prophet Muhammad, who exhibited a high level of leadership skill and political engagement.

The Prophet, they said, used his noble character to turn around the fortunes of Saudi Arabia and Muslims globally.
