40 die as boat capsize in DR Congo

No fewer than 40 people died when a boat capsized Sunday evening on the Congo River near Kindu, Maniema Province in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC), local media reported.

Reports say rescuers recovered at least 40 bodies from the waters after a boat, named “ABC-BONOBO,” capsized.

The boat was carrying about 50 passengers at the time it capsised.

Circumstances leading to the accident are yet unknown, according to the reports.

Mussa Kabwankubi, the Governor of the Province, declared three days of provincial mourning from Tuesday.

Kabwankubi reaffirmed his determination to shed light on the tragedy.

In June 2024, at least 86 people, including 21 children, died after a boat sank on the Kwa River.

KWa is one of the tributaries of the Congo River, in the Mai-Ndombe province, in the western DRC. (Xinhua)
