Israeli kills Hamas’ political leader Haniyeh in Iran

Hamas, on Wednesday, confirmed that an Israeli strike killed its political leader, Ismail Haniyeh in Iran.

Reports say Haniyeh was attending the inauguration of Iran’s new President Masoud Pezeshkian when the Israeli struck.

Iran’s Revolutionary Guards also announced the death, saying Israeli strike “hit” Haniyeh’s residence in Tehran.

“This morning, the residence of Ismail Haniyeh in Tehran was struck, resulting in his and one of his bodyguards’ martyrdom.

“The cause is under investigation and will be announced soon,” the IRGC said in a statement, adding that the attack was under investigation.

Also, the Iran state media reported that Haniyeh was assassinated around 2.00 a.m. on Wednesday.

It added that the Hamas political leader was staying at “a special residence for war veterans in north Tehran”.

“Further investigations are under way that will be announced soon,” said the state media.

Following the reported assassination, a senior Hamas official said that Haniyeh’s death “will not go unanswered”.

Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas has said the killing of Hamas political chief, Ismail Haniyeh was a “cowardly act”. He urged Palestinians to remain united against Israel.

“President Mahmoud Abbas of the State of Palestine strongly condemned the assassination of Hamas leader Ismail Haniyeh, deeming it a cowardly act and a serious escalation,” Abbas’ office said in a statement.

A former commander of Iran’s Revolutionary Guards, Mohsen Rezaie, warned on Wednesday that Israel would “pay a heavy price” for killing Haniyeh in Tehran, Iranian state media reported.

The Yemen’s Iran-backed Houthi fighters described Haniyeh’s killing as a “heinous terrorist crime”.
