An Islamic organisation, the Ansar-ud-deen Society of Nigeria (ADS), has expressed deep concern about the intended protests due to economic hardship in the country.

ADS President, Dr Abdulrafiu Sanni, said this in a statement emailed to TheNewsZenith on Wednesday in Lagos.

The organisation’s National Publicity Secretary, Sola Hassan, who signed the statement quoted Sanni as saying ADS “empathise with Nigerians”.

ADS noted that it recognised the continued efforts of the government to ensure better living conditions for the masses.

“We urge that the government take further steps to improve the present economic situation of Nigerians.

“We demand caution and calmness in handling the situation as the ADS believes that the planned public protest can create further security problems.

“It can even worsen the present economic situation.

“We, therefore, appeal to the planners of the protest to call off the action to allow peace to reign.

“This is also to enable the government to concentrate on ensuring urgent amelioration of the present unfavourable situation,” the statement read in part.

The Society strongly advised the government to allocate more resources to education, healthcare, agriculture and infrastructure.

“But it must ensure accountability to quicken the pace of recovery of our ailing economy.”

It further urged the government to improve the nation’s security architecture.

“The government should adequately fund the defence and other security agencies and monitor spending to ensure there are no leakages.

“We call on the National Assembly to improve considerably, its oversight functions of agencies to ensure judicious use of the tax payers’ money.”
