Lagos, Feb. 4, ’25 (TNZ) Residents of Owutu in the Agric Area of Ikorodu, at the weekend, got a reprieve as the Lagos State House of Assembly promised to investigate the proposed demolition of their properties.

TheNewsZenith reports that the Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly, Mrs Mojisola Meranda gave the assurance, promising a thorough investigation into the proposed demolition of their properties by the Lagos State Building Control Agency (LASBCA).

Addressing the residents during a peaceful protest at the Assembly complex, the Speaker assured of lawmakers’ commitment to justice.

“The Hose is opposed to oppression against the people,” Meranda, represented by Solomon Bonu of Badagry Constituency 1 said.

She assured that the House would summon all stakeholders involved in the matter for deliberation. This is in a bid to reach an amicable resolution.

The protesting residents said that the LASBCA issued a seven-day demolition notice which expired on Friday, Jan. 31.

They wondered why a genuine government agency would give a week’s demolition notice for buildings that were not distressed.

“We suspected foul play in the whole matter,” one of the protesting residents, Yinka Salam told TheNewsZenith.

He said the residents were gravely concerned over the impending demolition of the houses they have inhabited for over 40 years.

“This prompted  us to seek intervention from the Assembly, the people’s representatives.”

TheNewsZenith recalls that a large crowd of residents besieged the Assembly on Thursday to complain about the activities of some suspected land grabbers.

They alleged that the land grabbers were “only hiding under the cover of LASBCA to steal their land and resell to higher bidders”.
