Sen. Said Alkali, the Minister of Transportation, has described Thursday’s maiden trip of the Lagos-Ibadan freight train service as a significant milestone in Nigeria’s railway projects.
In a statement, on Sunday in Abuja, Alkali said the commencement of the service also reinforced the government’s dedication to providing a robust transportation network to Nigerians.
TheNewsZenith reports that the maiden freight train is laden with 30 units of 40-feet containers. It left Apapa Port in Lagos for Ibadan on Thursday.
Alkali stated that the successful operation of the container freight train reflected the meticulous planning, relentless efforts and diligent execution by the ministry and its partners.
He added that this served as a testament to the ministry’s unwavering commitment to realising the eight-point agenda of President Bola Tinubu’s administration.
The agenda prioritises the development of a modern and efficient transportation system.
The minister noted that the Lagos-Ibadan railway project, a crucial transportation infrastructure component, “holds immense potential to revolutionise the movement of goods and people”.

According to him, completion of the rail project signified major step in enhancing connectivity, boosting trade and stimulating economic growth.
He expressed satisfaction with the successful launch of the container freight train service, hailing it as a significant achievement.
“As the Lagos-Ibadan railway continues to expand its operations, it will play a pivotal role in alleviating road congestion.
“It will also reduce travel time and facilitate seamless movement of goods across the country.
“The successful container freight service signifies a promising future for the railway project.
“This will further solidify its position as a vital backbone of Nigeria’s transportation infrastructure,’’ Alkali said.
