Appeal Court judgment rob Kano majority – NNPP Chieftain

By Our Correspondent

A New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP) chieftain, Adekunle Aderibigbe, says the Appeal Court verdict on Kano governorship election is an attempt to rob Kano majority of their mandate.

TheNewsZenith reports that the Appeal Court, sitting in Abuja, on Friday, sacked Gov. Abba Yusuf. It upheld the petition tribunal’s earlier judgement on the matter.

Adekunle Aderibigbe, a Lagos State House of Assembly NNPP Candidate in 2023 general election.

Aderibigbe, a Lagos State House of Assembly NNPP Candidate in 2023 general election, told newsmen that the court should not have tampered with the principle of majority.

Democracy stands on the principle of the majority.

“The Appeal Court verdict, which invalidates the membership of the elected governor of Kano State, ridicules the choice of majority as a major principle of democracy.

“It also ridicules the importance of the participation of citizens in general elections.

“No NNPP member has ever disputed Gov. Yusuf as party member up to the point of being elected.

“Neither was he denied membership by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).

“Questioning his party membership, eight months after the election is not just evidence of a lack of substances to nullify the outcome of the election,” Aderibigbe said.

According to him, NNPP will exercise its right to get justice by disputing the verdict at the Supreme Court.

He expressed hope that the Supreme Court would reinstate Yusuf.

“The law will reinstate the rightful position and interests of the majority of Kano citizens.

“Pettiness of the preceding verdict over the primary democratic interest of one million ‘Kanawas’ for chosing Gov. Yusuf cannot stand.”

TheNewsZenith recalls that the Appeal Court, on Friday, upheld the decision of the Kano State Governorship Election Petitions Tribunal. The tribunal had sacked Yusuf earlier in September.

The appellate court headed by Justice M.U. Adumeh held that Yusuf was not a valid candidate in the March 18 gubernatorial election.

The three-member panel stated that proof of evidence was tendered before the court. established that the governor was not a member of the NNPP, at the time the election was held.

“Sponsorship without membership is like putting something on nothing,” the court ruled.
