The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has suspended its eight-month-old industrial action.
Although the suspension of the strike is with a condition, a member of the union’s National Executive Committee hinted in the early hour of Friday.
The NewsZenith gathered that the decision was taken at the end of the National Executive Council meeting, which was held at the ASUU secretariat in Abuja.
A highly informed source within the NEC said “Yes, it has been called off”.
Also, on its verified official Twitter handle, ASUU twitted at about 3.39 a.m. on Friday that “Congratulations Nigerian Students. The 8-month strike has been suspended conditionally, Universities to reopen on Monday, the 17th of October 2022”.
The union decided to suspend the strike during a meeting of its leadership that started on Thursday night and lasted into the early hours of Friday.
The meeting followed the intervention of the speaker of the House of Representatives, Femi Gbajabiamila, last week on the need for the union to call off the eight-month-old strike and, most importantly, the ruling of the Court of Appeal for the union to call off the strike.
The meeting was called by the union to determine its next line of action after its state branches met over the Court of Appeal ruling.
The NewsZenith recalls that the Court of Appeal had ordered ASUU to suspend the strike before its appeal of the ruling ordering lecturers to resume work can be heard.
The Appeal Court had ordered the union to call off the strike while it continues discussions with the Federal Government.
Members of the union’s National Executive Committee, which comprises the chairmen of the state chapters and members of the national executive, attended the meeting.
The union has been on strike since Feb. 14.
