Gov. Mai-Mala Buni of Yobe has reiterated his commitment to sustain the leadership position in transparency, accountability and following due process in all transactions.
Buni stated this while reacting to the “ overall top performer” award won by the state on fiscal transparency and accountability in Abuja.
The governor’s spokesman, Alhaji Mamman Mohammed said on Tuesday in Damaturu, that the award was presented by the Finance Minister, Mrs Zainab Ahmed.
The governor said the presentation followed a recent landmark rating of Yobe by the State Fiscal Transparency, Accountability and Sustainability (SFTAS), a World Bank group, at a dinner organised for the 36 governors of the federation.
“This administration will continue to promote transparency and accountability in governance to have value for money on all expenditures.
“We are a state with low revenue and in dire need of infrastructure and services.
“We must use our resources judiciously and transparently to achieve set targets to improve the lives of people,” Buni said.
The governor commended the state’s civil servants who believe in and share the vision and mission of his administration.
“I want to especially appreciate our civil servants who are the implementors of government policies and programmes.
“I thank them for being on the same page with the government to achieve this great feat,” he added.
Speaking at the dinner, the minister applauded state governments for their performance and for producing positive results.
She said the $1.5 billion SFTAS programme supported by the World Bank had promoted the institutionalisation of fiscal reforms in states.
Ahmed said the programme was aimed at spurring the states to do more in fiscal transparency and accountability.
Director-General of Yobe Bureau for Public Procurement, Samaila Mai-Adamu, attributed the rating to Buni’s insistence on following due process.
“Buni always insist the Bureau must check every project executed by the state government for due process, transparency and accountability.
“I am glad that the Bureau is performing its functions and responsibilities without hindrance,” Mai-Adamu said.
Yobe also won the best state in the Due Process, Accountability and Transparency award.
The award is from the Association of Public Procurement Practitioners of Nigeria (APPPN).
“This is a confirmation that Yobe state has assumed new leading status on accountability and transparency,” the Director-General said.
