Death toll in Johannesburg fire hit 63

No fewer than 63 people died and 43 others sustained injuries, on Thursday when a building in a South African city centre caught fire, an official said.

Robert Mulaudzi, spokesperson for the City of Johannesburg Emergency Management Services, said they received information that the five-storey building was on fire at around 1.30 a.m. on Thursday (23.30 GMT Wednesday).

“On arrival, firefighters started to evacuate people out of the building.

“They also conducted firefighting operations.

“Ten people died on the scene and the rescue team transported the injured to various healthcare facilities for further medical care,” Mulaudzi said.

The exact cause of the blaze is still under investigation, he said.

The spokesperson added that the City of Johannesburg Disaster Management has drafted its officials to facilitate relief for affected families. (Xinhua)
