Don seeks subsidised inputs for farmers

A university lecturer, Dr Suleiman Lawal, has urged the Federal Government to provide farm inputs to farmers at subsidised rate.

Lawal, a lecturer at Economics Department, Umaru Musa Yar’adua University, Katsina, gave the advice on Sunday in Kastina.

He said such subsidy would help to stem rising cost of food in the country.

According to him, such assistance would also enhancing agricultural productivity and guarantee food security.

He noted that the measure would further assist the country in boosting exports.

This will in turn increase revenue base of both the government and farmers, he said.

“Providing farmers with farm inputs will boost subsistence farming.

“This will lead to increase in food supply and bring down prices of food items.”

He listed some consequences of food inflation to include increase in the cost of living, hunger and depreciation of Naira.

The lecturer also advised the government to introduce price reduction policy to ease hardships faced by the people.

Lawal said that the World Bank had forecast that the war between Russia and Ukraine could exacerbate inflation in Nigeria.
