The Lagos State Government has advised Private Sector Participant, PSP operators in the waste management value chain to improve their service delivery.
Commissioner for Environment and Water Resources, Mr Tokunbo Wahab, gave the advice during a meeting with the executives of the Association of Waste Managers of Nigeria (AWAM) at the weekend in Lagos.
Wahab also charged the operators to ensure transparency in their dealing with the general public.
The commissioner tasked the PSPs to digitise their operations so as to make their service more transparent and profitable.
“The government is aware that PSP operators are in business to make profit and sustain employment. Therefore, you must digitise your cash collection for transparency.
“If, for example, you tell me that you have control of 45 per cent of this business, tell me what 100 per cent of the business is.
“These are some logical questions that demand answers,” the commissioner said.
He advised AWAM to evolve effective data collation and do enumeration of all commercial and private facilities they are serving.
This, he noted, will enhance accountability and enable the operators to render their service efficiently.

“The government is aware that the operators need interventions. But you must explain why the revenue you are generating presently, dropped by 50 per cent within five years.
Managing Director of LAWMA, Muyiwa Gbadegesin, said there was a need to have a verifiable database to ascertain the size of the PSP businesses.
Gbadegesin appealed to thePSP operators to provide accurate data for all households in the state.
This, she said, would enable the government know those paying for the service.
AWAM President, Mr Olugbenga Adebola, thanked the state government for re-awakening the consciousness of residents to be more environmentally conscious.
Adebola assured the government of members’ commitment to ensure a cleaner Lagos.
“We are set to continually work with the state government having invested hugely in the project.
He said the PSP operators “are operating under tough business environment”. This, he added, is making it difficult for them to break even.
