No fewer than 16,000 families suffered the consequences of flooding in Lagos State in 2022, according to data released by the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA).
Ibrahim Farinloye, Coordinator of NEMA in Lagos, said in a state also that 6,000 farmers lost seedlings and farm produce.
In the statement, mailed to TheNewsZenith, on Saturday, Farinloye said the 2022 floods negatively impacted various sectors of the economy.
The agency issued the statement against the backdrop of NEMA/World Bank initiative on strengthening resilience and lessons learned from the 2022 flood disaster.
It quoted the Director-General of NEMA, Alhaji Mustapha Ahmed, as saying “the flooding of 2022 impacted about 16,000 families while 6,000 farmers lost seedings and farm produce”.

Ahmed stressed the need to reappraise efforts on flooding incident, identify gaps and bridge gaps for effective and efficient response.
“Due to 2022 flooding, NEMA directed its Lagos Territorial Office and other field offices to mitigate losses. And to strengthen the resilience of Nigerians for the 2023 rainy season.
“This is the reason why we experienced drastic reduction in losses this year, even as rainfall doubled in 2023 season,” the statement read in part.
NEMA boss sent words of gratitude to Lagos State government for the synergy and partnership it extended to the agency.
