Oyo (Oyo State), June 1, ’25 (TNZ) A female professor of chemical engineering, Tinuade Afolabi, has called for public recognition of the achievements of women engineers and to address gender biases and stereotypes that often hinder their advancement.

TheNewsZenith reports that Prof. Afolabi of the Department of Chemical Engineering, Ladoke Akintola University of Technology, Ogbomoso in Oyo State, made the call in Oyo Town recently.

Afolabi spoke at the inauguration of Dr Iretioluwa Mojisola Oyerinde as the Pioneer Chairman of the Association of Professional Women Engineers of Nigeria (APWEN), Oyo State Chapter.

The topic of her presentation was “Impact of Women Engineers in Technological Advancement”.

According to her, publicising the achievements of women engineers would help debunk the myth that engineering is a male-dominated profession.

She stressed the need to encourage more women to pursue careers in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM).

“Technological advancements have paved the way for women to empower themselves personally and professionally.

“Examples are Information and Communication Technologies (ICT), Artificial Intelligence (AI), Robotics and Biotechnology.

“The development of the internet, smartphones, and social media has revolutionised communication and access to information,” TheNewsZenith quotes Afolabi as saying.

Dr Adebisi Osim, President of the Association of Professional Women Engineers of Nigeria (APWEN), also spoke on the establishment of the Oyo Chapter of the association.

Osim said this signals a bold step toward inclusion, innovation, and capacity building in the engineering profession, particularly in Oyo State.
