A Consultant Neuropsychiatrist, Dr Maymunah Yusuf-Kadiri, says going on vacation or travelling improves mental health, enhances overall well-being and helps to reduce stress.

TheNewsZenith reports that Yusuf-Kadiri, the Medical Director at Pinnacle Medical Services Ltd., made the remarks while interacting with newsmen in Lagos.

Travelling or holidaying, she said, offers the brain time to rest and recover, resulting in improved performance and productivity.

The Neuropsychiatrist also said that exposure to new cultures, languages and landscapes could help stimulate the brain and enhance creativity.

According to her, travelling makes people encounter different ways of thinking and living, which can inspire new ideas.

“Travelling also boosts creativity for problem-solving and innovation upon returning to daily life.

“Travelling, whether it is a weekend getaway or an extended vacation, offers more than just a break from daily routines.

“It has psychological advantages and profound mental health benefits that can enhance overall well-being.

“The change of scenery, new experiences and taking a break from daily responsibilities help to lower cortisol levels, the body’s primary stress hormone, thereby reducing stress.

“Being in a new environment can interrupt the routine stressors and provide a sense of escape and relaxation. It improves mood, levels of happiness and satisfaction,” Yusuf-Kadiri said.

The Director also noted that a changing environment, especially one that is free from everyday stressors, can improve sleep quality.

“Exposure to natural sunlight, fresh air, and physical activity during travel can help regulate sleep patterns and lead to better rest.”

She also said that vacation could boost confidence and broaden perspective to help individuals better manage their life’s challenges.

It also enhances social connections, reduces feelings of isolation and fosters a sense of connection with the global community.

“The anticipation of a trip can boost mood even before the journey begins, and the experiences during travel create lasting positive memories.

“These are a source of joy and nostalgia, contributing to long-term happiness.

“So, for Nigerians seeking to enhance their mental health, incorporating vacation into your lives can be a valuable and enriching strategy,” she said.
