The Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA) says the state recorded 1,461 emergency incidents in 2023.

Mr Nosa Okunbor, the Head of the Public Affairs Unit of LASEMA, announced this in a statement emailed to TheNewsZenith on Sunday in Lagos. According to Okunbor, it is the statutory responsibility of LASEMA to respond, rescue, recover and ensure disaster risk reduction in the state. In the last four and half years, LASEMA has responded to 6,442 incidents, from June 1, 2019, to Dec. 31, 2023. In December 2023 alone, LASEMA recorded 138 incidents. Out of these, articulated vehicles caused 58 accidents that required emergency operation. Also, there were 39 truck/tanker accidents and 12 breakdowns of articulated vehicles in December 2023. Still in December, 29 other vehicles crashed while the agency recorded eight medical emergencies. There were 11 fire incidents during the period. “Other events category recorded a total of 19 incidents made up of two bridge repairs, one assault and various other cases,” it stated. On building collapse, iLASEMA said it recorded nine cases comprising two full building collapses, five partial collapses and two bridges collapsed. LASEMA further stated that it recorded one incident of oil spillages/leakages category during the outgone year. “It said that there was no case of explosions, marine incidents, train or air crashes in December 2023.
