A team of officials from Akwa Ibom State have arrived in Lagos to understudy the Lagos Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA) on disaster management and response.

Permanent Secretary of LASEMA, Dr Olufemi Oke-Osayintolu, told newsmen on Monday that the team “is in Lagos for partnership and shared knowledge on disaster management”.

Oke-Osanyintolu said the partnership is to help Akwa Ibom to develop a formidable emergency response team.

According to him, the team came for a three-day visit to understudy LASEMA onb disaster management and operations.

He said part of the learning process for the team was to understand what makes LASEMA thick.

The PS explained that the mandate of LASEMA encompasses emergency and disaster prevention, preparedness, mitigation, recovery and relief.

“LASEMA is in position to provide swift and effective responses to a diverse array of emergencies in Lagos.

“This collaborative approach enhances our collective response capabilities and builds resilience in the face of emergencies and disasters.

He said the impact of emergencies is deeply felt at the grassroots level.

“To this extent, LASEMA has established Local Council Emergency Management Committees and Local Emergency Cadets.

“This initiative ensures prompt and effective responses to emergencies across the state,” Oke-Osanyintolu said.

Also speaking, a representative of the team from Akwa Ibom, Mr John Isangedighi, said they settled for Lagos because of LASEMA’s giant strides in disaster management.

“LASEMA has on-ground structures, they have management, operational models and tactical teams.

“This informed our decision to visit Lagos State to understudy their operational models, administrative structure and the various units they use in meeting whatever challenge that may confront them,” Isangedighi said.
