The Lagos State Government reaffirmed its commitment to a continuous sanitation advocacy campaign, aimed at sustainable hygiene practices.
TheNewsZenith reports that Special Adviser to the Governor on Environment, Olakunle Rotimi-Akodu, gave the affirmation during a community-based sanitation exercise at Alamutu Market in Idi-Oro, Mushin.
According to Rotimi-Akodu, key Highlights of the Initiative include advocacy and engagement, community involvement and collaborative efforts.
Others are waste management, and areas of coverage.
Advocacy and Engagement:
The Special Adviser and his team actively participated in drainage cleaning on Agege Motor Road.
He said this was a demonstration of the state government’s dedication to leading by example.
Rotimi-Akodu stressed the importance of maintaining a clean environment to prevent disease spread, urging traders to handle food hygienically and keep their surroundings clean.
Community Involvement:
He said the market, previously shut down due to poor sanitary conditions, serves as a reminder of the consequences of poor hygiene practices.
He encourage traders to clear heaps of refuse and avoid street trading to maintain cleanliness.
Ongoing Campaign:
The sanitation advocacy will continue across all 57 LGs/LCDAs and various public spaces.

This is to cultivate voluntary adherence to good sanitation practices among residents.
“If there is no significant improvement, the government may consider reintroducing monthly environmental sanitation exercises,” Rotimi-Akodu warned.
Collaborative Effort:
The Permanent Secretary of the Office of Environmental Services, Dr Omobolaji Gaji, said the exercise would raise awareness about the importance of sanitation for health and longevity.
Gaji encouraged residents to report unsanitary behaviours to relevant government agencies.
He emphasized community responsibility in maintaining a clean environment.
Waste Management:
Muyiwa Gbadegesin, Managing Director of LAWMA, stressed the importance of residents acquiring waste bins for ease of waste disposal.
Gbadegesin also advised them to patronisev PSP operators, rather than the outlawed cart pushers.
“Effective waste management practice is linked to improving economic activities across Lagos,” the LAWMA boss said.
