Morocco announced, on Tuesday, that it rescued 38 irregular migrants in the Atlantic Ocean off the kingdom’s coast, including a woman and a child.

The Royal Moroccan Armed Forces made the announcement, published in the official Moroccan News Agency bulletin.

“Morocco’s Royal Navy, on Tuesday, intercepted a pirogue (small boat), 170 kilometres south-west off Dakhla.

“The boat was carrying 38 sub-Saharan would-be migrants, including one woman and a child,” said the navy.

“The pirogue set sail from Mauritania on Oct. 14, heading for the Canary Islands.”

Reports say the navy rescued the migrants and taken them safely to the port of Dakhla.

Royal Navy handed the migrants over to the Royal Gendarmerie for the usual administrative procedures after receiving necessary health checks.

The Interior Ministry in Rabat announced on Jan. 23 that it thwarted 75,184 irregular migrants in 2023. This showed an increase of six per cent compared with 2022.

“More than 419 human trafficking networks were dismantled during the past year,” the ministry said at the time.

African citizens from sub-Saharan countries are increasingly attempting to migrate to Europe in search of a better life.

This is due to wars, security instability and deteriorating economic conditions in their countries.
