Nigeria shined at the ongoing World Radio Communication (WRC) conference, in Dubai, UAE as International Telecommunications Union (ITU) elected two directors of Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) into its Working Groups.
Reuben Muoka, NCC’s Director of Public Affairs, announced this in a statement e-mailed to TheNewsZenith on Tuesday.
Muoka quoted the CEO of the Commission, Dr Aminu Maida, as announcing the election of the two directors while speaking on the sidelines of WRC 2023 in Dubai.
According to Maida, Abraham Oshadami, NCC’s Director of Spectrum Administration was elected Vice-Chairman of the ITU’s Radiocommunication Advisory Group (RAG).
Also, Dr Lasisi Salami Lawal, Acting General Manager and Project Manager of Navigation Project Office, Nigerian Communications Satellite Ltd, was elected Vice-Chairman of ITU-R Study Group Four (Satellite Services).
ITU also elected some other members of NCC delegation into the WRC 2023 Working Groups.
The CEO congratulated the NCC delegates for their election into ITU.
He also commended the Minister of Communications, Innovation and Digital Economy, Dr Bosun Tijani, for “providing guidance, leadership, encouragement and support to the Nigerian delegation at the conference”.
TheNewsZenith reports that WRC Conference brings together a global community.
“Participants at the conference will agree on the use of the world’s finite spectrum resources and electromagnetic waves.
“These provide connectivity for our day-to-day technologies,” Maida said.
He expressed delight at the outcome of the elections, stating that the roles of the elected delegates would enhance Nigeria’s global standing in the telecom space.

“Their presence in ITU’s Working Groups will also ensure that Nigeria’s interests and goals align with global best practices.
“I am excited about the election of two of our colleagues, Engr Oshadami and Dr Lawal as Vice Chairs of the Key Study Groups.
“It is an honour for the Nigerian Communications Commission and the Nigeria Communications Satellite Limited. Both have produced these two intellectuals as global radiocommunication leaders.
“Their positions will also ensure that our interests and goals aptly align with global best practices.
“This is especially as we work towards attaining the target set by the National Broadband Plan,” Maida said.
NCC boss also engaged with leadership of the ITU and other leaders in the global telecom industry at the event.
He held meetings with Secretary-General of ITU, Mrs Doreen Borden-Martin and Secretary-General of African Telecommunications Union (ATU), Mr John Omo.
During the meetings, the NCC boss shared his vision and priorities for the Commission.
He also highlighted potential areas of collaboration and increased Nigerian participation in the two unions.
