The Tinubu Stakeholders Forum (TSF) says the Supreme Court decision, affirming local governments’ autonomy is a monumental step towards reinforcing grassroots development.

In a statement, on Saturday, the Forum wholeheartedly applauded the Apex Court’s landmark judgement.

TheNewsZenith reports that the court ordered the Federal Government to immediately begin direct payment of funds to Local Governments.

The Forum argued that verdict would enhance operational efficiency and accountability for local governments.

“This is a pivotal ruling, which signifies a monumental step towards reinforcing grassroots democracy.

“It will foster local government administration across Nigeria.

“We recognise that the Apex Court’s decision will significantly enhance the operational efficiency and accountability of the third tier of government.

“By ensuring that funds are directly channelled to Local Governments, we can guarantee that resources are utilised precisely where they are needed the most.

This will, therefore, accelerate development projects and improving service delivery at the community level.

“The ruling effectively curtails the undue influence of state governments over local government finances.

“It will promote a more transparent and equitable distribution of resources.

“For us, a particularly groundbreaking aspect of the ruling is the outlawing of caretaker committees.

“Caretakers have long been used to undermine democratic processes at the local level,” it stated.

TSF also gave an insight into the implications of the judgement on local government administration in the country.

“The Court’s decision to withhold funds from councils operating under such caretaker arrangements is a decisive step in upholding constitutional governance.

`This newfound financial autonomy is essential for addressing the unique needs of each community.

“It will also drive sustainable development and enhancing the overall quality of life for all Nigerians.
