A socio-political group, The Collective Movement (TCM) has appealed to President Bola Tinubu’s administration to commit to workers’ welfare by approving a living wage for civil servants.

The appeal is contained in a statement issued by Ndubuisi Nwachukwu, TCM’s Director of Media, on Tuesday in Lagos.

TheNewsZenith reports that TCM issued the statement to mark 25 years of unbroken democracy in Nigeria.

The group noted that the plight of Nigerian workers presently “is unbearable and calls for urgent attention”.

It asked the government to come up with a living wage as negotiation is ongoing with the labour leaders.

“A living wage will forestall total collapse of the economy which labour is threatening.”

TCM also reminded the government to use this auspicious time of our national celebration to reflect on many challenges confronting the nation, especially hunger and insecurity.

The rising inflation, necessitated by hike in fuel price among others, have made the lives extremely difficult for citizens.

“Many Nigerians are on the edge and are becoming impatient,” the group stated.

It implored the government to take urgent actions to reduce the suffering of workers.

This is necessary to prevent loss of loyalty and dedication of the workforce.

According to the group, the government has not been able to address the problem of brain drain which it had promised to checkmate.

“The ruling party, All Progressives Congress (APC) has failed the people in the last eight years it took office with the message of ‘CHANGE’.

“With the ‘Renewed Hope’ mantra now at the behest of President Bola Tinubu, the people expect their lives to be better.

“’The nation has been facing economic challenges since APC came to power. Now, it is extremely difficult for citizens to afford life necessities,” TMC stated.

Overall, the group noted that Nigerians are hopeful for a more prosperous, peaceful and democratic future.

It, therefore, advocated that the federal government should prioritise good governance, anti-corruption and the welfare of citizens.
