The Korea International Cooperation Agency (KOICA) has donated more than 1,662 educational digital content to Nigeria to boost the Universal Basic Education Commission (UBEC).
TheNewsZenith reports that the Ambassador of the Republic of Korea to Nigeria, Kim Pan-kyu presented the materials to the Executive Secretary of UBEC, Dr Hamid Bobboyi, on Monday in Abuja.
The donation marked a significant milestone in the Smart Education project, a collaborative initiative between KOICA and UBEC that began in 2021.
The digital contents are for Primary 4-6 pupils and Junior Secondary School (JSS) 1 students.
They covered mathematics and science subjects to help improve classroom teaching and learning outcomes.
It will also increase pupils/students interest in science, technology, engineering and mathematics
(STEM) subjects.
TheNewsZenith reports that Nigeria has received substantial support from the Korean government, with a generous grant of $10.4 million to enhance basic education through smart technologies.
In his remarks, the Ambassador said education was key to the development of any nation, “especially in today’s digital age”.
“Providing school members with access to high quality digital resources is essential for students growth and future success,” Pan-kyu said.
He added that the ceremony represents South Korea’s shared commitment to quality education in Nigeria.
According to him, this also strengthen bilateral cooperation between the two nations, through the collaboration between KOICA and UBEC.
“We all know that education is key to the development of any nation, especially in today’s digital age.
“With this in mind, we are here to celebrate the delivery of 1662 video clips with other educational contents on the subject of mathematics and basic science.

“A lot of efforts from experts in Korea and Nigeria have been put in place to make the vision a reality.
“The educational digital contents are expected to be disseminated across the 37 smart schools and other public schools in Nigeria,”he said.
Pan-kyu also expressed his government’s willingness in supporting the education
sector in Nigeria.
Receiving the materials, Bobboyi thanked the Ambassador for the Korea government’s support in improving basic education in Nigeria.
The UBEC boss recalled that the commission’s team visited the Korean Embassy three years ago and signed an MOU for the Smart Education Project.
“Since then, we have worked closely with the Korean experts in the implementations of the smart education project.
“And so far, we have achieved a lot together in improving basic education in Nigeria,,” TheNewsZenith quotes Bobboyi as saying.
He also noted that the intervention has become a symbol of cooperation between both countries.
NAN also reports that prior to the handover of the digital contents to UBEC,
KOICA has installed modern Content Development Studios (CDS) with state of art equipment for producing digital contents in schools.
This installation was ahead of the donation of the digital contents.
The CDS are found in KOICA-Supported Smart schools in Kano, Cross River, Bauchi, Ekiti, Nasarawa and Abuja (FCT).
