The management of Ambrose Alli University (AAU), Ekpoma in Edo State has suspended academic activities indefinitely, following prolonged student protest.
The institution’s Head of Corporate Affairs, Otunba Mike Aladenika, announced the suspension in a statement on Tuesday.
TheNewsZenith reports that students have been protesting against an alleged increase in school fees, thereby disrupting academic activities.
Aladenika said the institution’s Acting Registrar, Mr Ambros Odiase, signed the memo for the suspension of activities activities.
“The suspension became necessary to prevent a breakdown of law and order.

“There is also the need to guarantee the safety of lives and property in the university community,” the Varsity stated.
According to the statement, management also took the decision following an emergency meeting of the university’s Senate in Ekpoma on Monday.
The meeting appraised the continued protest by students, running into two consecutive days.
“Senate was left with no choice but to direct an immediate suspension of academic activities.

“To this effect, all students residing in the hostels on campus are to vacate the halls of residence within the next 24 hours.
“No student should be seen in or around the halls of residence of the University by 3.00 p.m. on Tuesday,” the management stated.
Consequently, Aladenika stated that the 40th Matriculation of the university, scheduled for Tuesday, had also been suspended indefinitely.
