Thousands of Muslims across the strata of the society converged in Abeokuta at the weekend for the 17th Annual State Lecture of The Muslim Congress (TMC).

TheNewsZenith reports that the lecture’s theme was “Building of Great Nation: Collective Responsibility of the Leader and the Led”.

Our correspondent reports that top government functionaries, private sector operators, civil servants, traders and artisans trooped out for the event.

In his welcome address, the Amir (National President) of the TMC, Alhaji Taiwo Bangbala, remarked that the annual event is a forum created to share views, ideas and positions.

Chairman (Waali) of TMC in Ogun State, Dr AbdulRazaq Ogunmoye, represented the National President at the occasion.

The Amir challenged the world leaders to stand up with the Palestinians against Israeli aggression.

At the annual event, Bangbala said the lecture was meant to guide the nation toward progress and prosperity.

“Nigeria’s 64th Independent Anniversary is a significant milestone, presenting a unique opportunity to acknowledge our journey as a nation.

“It is also a period to retrospectively examine our current challenges and contemplate the responsibilities that lie ahead,” TheNewsZenith quotes Ogunmoye as saying.

He remarked that the theme of this year’s lecture resonates deeply with the trials we currently face as a nation.

“Amidst the dire economic circumstances, it is crucial to recognise that the struggles are not mere statistical figures but represent tangible hardship.

“Millions of Nigerians face palpable suffering, with families struggling daily to meet some necessities.”

Speaking on the Israeli’s oppression and genocidal war against the people of Palestine, the TMC Amir said the world is witnessing the heart-wrenching tragedy unfolding in the Palestinian territory.

He challenged the entire world leaders to stand for actions against the oppression of the Palestinian people.

“He said the Israeli aggression, recently extended to Lebanon, regrettably negates the principle of peace reconciliation and humanitarian imperatives.

“The time is now, for the world to stand up against oppression against the Palestinian people.’’

Also, the Olowu of Owu Kingdom, Oba (Prof.) Oba Saka Matemilola spoke about leaders’ selfish and negative behaviours in society.

The royal father also dwelled on some people who make frivolous demands for leaders in high positions.

“These behaviours, he said, breed corruption in the society and tend to erode the development and good governance,” he said.

The Olowu challenged Muslims to let the culture and practice of Islam reflect in their character, wherever they find themselves.

TheNewsZenith reports that the event features two key lectures centred on good governance.

Prof. Afis Ayinde Oladosu of the Department of Arabic and Islamic Studies, University of Ibadan spoke on “Good Governance: Catalyst for Economic Growth and Development”.

Also, Shaykh Qamarudden Ballo, the Chief Imam of Gbesin Niyi from Osogbo, spoke on “Political and Economic Stability: Insights from Islamic History”.
