Walk-for-life: HCFI, TMC urge regular body exercise

A Consultant Pharmacist and Clinical Pharmacologist, Prof. Adekunle Ibrahim Oreagba, has reiterated the importance of regular body exercise for a healthier life and keeping fit.

Oreagba, who works in the Department of Pharmacology Therapeutics and Toxicology, College of Medicine University of Lagos, gave the advice during the 10th edition of the “Walk-For-Life” exercise held on Sunday in Lagos.

TheNewsZenith reports that two faith-based organisations, the Human Concern Foundation International (HCFI) and The Muslim Congress (TMC) jointly organised the programme.

“Walk For Life 2023” is an annual health and fitness programme, meant to create awareness of the need for regular exercise.

Oreagba, who is also the Executive Director of the HCFI, spoke to TheNewsZenith about the significance of the annual exercise.

“This exercise is tagged “Walk-for-Life and it is to create awareness about the importance of walking as a form of exercise in the community.

“When you walk regularly, at least three to four times a week, it gives you a strong immune system.

“It boosts your heart’s functioning system; your memory cells are strengthened. It reduces your likelihood of having many cardiovascular diseases like hypertension and diabetes.

“Walking is a very important activity in our lives,” he told TheNewsZenith.

According to him, organisers dedicated this year’s edition to celebrating the 30th anniversary of The Muslim Congress (TMC). It is also to create awareness among men and women in the country.

Oreagba said a representative of Permanent Secretary of the State Ministry of Youths and Sports is involved in the exercise.

TheNewsZenith reports that more than 700 men, women and children participated in the exercise.

The trek started at LASPARK Gardens, Jibowu under-bridge at exactly 7.00 a.m. through Anthony Busstop, Maryland Roundabout back to Jubowu.

Participants, old and young, adorned blue and pink colour T-shirts with face caps to match during the guided walk.

Officials of the Police and Federal Road Safety Corps were on hand to direct traffic.

A medical team from the state Ministry of Health also accompanied the participants to attend to emergency medical issues.

They were chanting the slogans “Walk, walk, walk for life” and “Treck, Treck Treck for life”.

Young participants distributed educative pamphlets that spelt out benefits of regular walking to passersby along the route.
