…..Tasks supervising AIGs, CPs on enforcement of CBN Act
The Inspector-General of Police, Usman Baba, has placed high-ranking police personnel on red alert to arrest and prosecute anyone selling or abusing Naira.
The order is in furtherance of Federal Government’s policy to uphold provisions of Central Bank of Nigeria Act, 2007.
It also aimed at dignifying the Nigeria’s currency.
CSP Olumuyiwa Adejobi issued a statement containing the IG’s order and e-mailed it to The NewsZenith on Saturday.
The statement quoted Baba as ordering the Deputy Inspector-General of Police in charge of the Force Criminal Investigations Department and the Assistant Inspector-General of Police in charge of the Force Intelligence Bureau to place their officers and men on high alert to carry out the arrest.
“In furtherance of the Federal Government’s policy and drives to uphold the provisions of the Central Bank of Nigeria Act, 2007, and dignify Nigeria’s currency, the Inspector-General of Police, Usman Baba, has ordered the Deputy Inspector-General of Police(DIG) in charge of the Force Criminal Investigations Department and the Assistant Inspector-General of Police(AIG) in charge of the Force Intelligence Bureau to place officers and men of the Department and the Bureau across the nation on high alert.
“They are to arrest and subsequent prosecute all individuals engaged in the sale or abuse of the Naira notes issued by the Central Bank of Nigeria,” the statement read in part.

Similarly, the IG has charged all supervisory AIGeneral and Commissioners of Police in charge of Commands and Formations to carry out full enforcement of the provisions of Sections 20 and 21 of the Central Bank of Nigeria Act, 2007.
The Act seek to criminalises the hawking, trading, spraying, dancing or matching on the Naira notes.
It also criminalise falsification or counterfeiting bank notes.
Refusal to accept Naira as means of payment and tampering with the coins/notes issued by the CBN are equally criminalised.
Baba reiterated the mandate of the Police to enforce laws without prejudice to the enabling Acts of other security agencies.
He urged Nigerians to cooperate with the Police as it deals decisively with violators of provisions of the CBN Act”.
These, Baba said, are with a view to having a well-policed society in all ramifications within the country.
