AU’s rights body condemns indiscriminate bombings in Sudan

The African Commission on Human and Peoples’ Rights (ACHPR) has condemned “in the strongest terms” the indiscriminate bombings and shelling in Sudan.

The ACHPR, an African Union (AU) organ, said it is following, with deep concern, the grave unfolding situation in Sudan.

“Reports reaching the African Commission reveal that the outbreak of fighting between the Sudan Armed Forces and the Rapid Support Forces on April 15, has put human and Sudanese People’s rights in great peril.

“This is with the violence worsening by the day,” the ACHPR said in a statement issued late Friday.

The ACHPR expressed about indiscriminate conduct of hostilities, including bombings and shelling of sites in civilian residential areas.

“The bombings and shelling have been causing the death and maiming of people.”

It deplored various violations the fighting is occasioning to civilians and civilian infrastructure.

These have led to the loss of lives, bodily injuries, psychological trauma and the destruction of homes.

There was also obstruction of access to healthcare for the wounded and the sick among others.

It reminded conflicting parties to bear responsibility for all violations, pain and suffering that their actions are inflicting on civilians.

ACHPR warned that they will be held accountable for these violations.

It also decries reports of emerging involvement of foreign parties in supporting the different sides to the conflict in Sudan.

The continental body called for an immediate, unconditional cessation of hostilities and urgent establishment of humanitarian access for people in need.

Meanwhile, the ACHPR called on the AU Commission to initiate, a mechanism for the documentation and reporting on the human rights issues in the ongoing fighting in Sudan.

This should include the assignments of an investigation mission by the AU Peace and Security Council. (Xinhua)
