Cybercrime: Court convicts 3 in Ilorin

A High Court in Ilorin, Kwara State, on Wednesday, convicted three men for cybercrime in a case filed by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC).

The convicts are Richard Asaolu – an interior decorator from Iloffa in Oke-Ero Local Government Area of the state; Adeoye Olashile and Madiu Tajudeen, both from Oyo State.

They had earlier pleaded guilty to the charges.

The Ilorin Zonal Command of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) dragged the convicts before the court in separate suits.

Delivering judgement, Justice Adebayo Yusuf said the prosecution had proved the cases beyond reasonable doubt and pronounced the defendants guilty.

Yusuf sentenced Asaolu to six months imprisonment with an option of an N100,000 fine.

He ordered that a Samsung S10 phone and $300, believed to be proceeds from the crime, should be forfeited to the Federal Government.

The judge also sentenced Olashile to six months imprisonment with an option of a N50,000 fine.

He is also to forfeit his iPhone 13 Promax and $400 cash to the Federal Government.

The third convict, Tajudeen also bagged six months imprisonment with an option of a N100,000 fine.

Tajudeeen equally forfeited a Samsung S8 phone and an HP laptop used as instruments of the crime and $600.

Earlier, Counsel to the EFCC, M. M. Kaigama, led operatives of the commission in evidence as witnesses to review the facts of the cases.

The witnesses narrated the circumstances surrounding the arrest of the defendants.

They also tendered their extra-judicial statements, brands of phones recovered and sums of money as restitution.

The court admitted the items as evidence.
