FG to enhance training for teaching hospitals personnel

The Federal Government has pledged to support the training of workers in its teaching hospitals and other tertiary health institutions to meet emerging challenges in healthcare delivery.

Vice-President Kashim Shettima gave the assurance when he received the management of the University of Maiduguri Teaching Hospital, on Wednesday at the presidential villa, Abuja.

TheNewsZenith reports that the Chief Medical Director, Prof. Ahmed Ahidjo led the hospital management team on the visit.

Shettima said President Bola Tinubu accords top priority to enhanced healthcare delivery in his administration’s  “Renewed Hope Agenda”.

He commended the current management of the institution for the giant strides recorded over the years.

He assured of Tinubu’s administration’s commitment to supporting human capacity development in hospitals, across the country.

“Training is essential. We will explore all available windows to support the Maiduguri teaching hospitals and other teaching hospitals in training their personnel.

“We will see how our partnership with the private sector can be helpful in this regard,” he said.

Shettima commended the CMD and his team for providing quality leadership to the hospital.

“There have been remarkable improvements at the hospital since his assumption of duty.

“In terms of staff morale, capacity building and the general outlook of the teaching hospital, the improvements have been massive.

“The expansion of the hospital from a 600-bed to a 1305-bed facility, equipped with modern facilities.

“The CMD has been proactive and aggressive in all he does, including sourcing for external funding.”

Earlier, Ahidjo said the team thanked the Vice-President for supporting the institution in the last 15 years.

The CMD said with government support, the hospital has expanded from a 600-bed to a 1,305-bed facility equipped. It also has state-of-the-art machines.

He, however, requested more support from the Vice-President to enable the institution to actualise its objectives.

The objective is to be an international centre of excellence in healthcare delivery.
