IG assures Nigerians of unhindered Saturday polls

Inspector General of Police (IG), Usman Alkali, has ordered restriction of vehicular movement on roads, waterways and other forms of transportation, from noon to 6.00 p.m. on Saturday.

CSP Olumuyiwa Adejobi, Force Public Relations Officer, announced the IG’s restriction order at a press briefing on Thursday in Abuja.

Adejobi said the restriction order affects all states where INEC would conduct governorship and the house of assembly elections.

INEC officials, electoral observers, accredited media, ambulances responding to medical emergencies and firefighters are, however, exempted from the movement restriction.

This directive also excludes the Federal Capital Territory as no election will take place there.

Similarly, IG reiterated ban on security aides to VIPs from accompanying their principals to polling booths and collation centres.

State-established security outfits/organisations, quasi-security units, privately-owned guards and security outfits are also barred from participating in election security management.

The IG, therefore, urges all citizens to be law-abiding during and after the elections.

He assures that the Force has emplaced all necessary security arrangements to ensure people exercise their franchise unhindered.

He also urges the general public to contact the Nigeria Police Force Headquarters via 08033440189 (DIG Operations), 08033027731 (AIG FEDOPS) and 08034040439 (CP Elections) to request emergency security response.

Other communication channels for response requests are the ‘NPF Rescue Me App’ on Android and ios and via the NPF Emergency Toll-free line – 08031230631.

Similarly, the Force will repeatedly release other election situation room numbers, shared on Police social media platforms for emergency contact.
